Mur Lafferty


Insightful, witty, and passionate, Mur Lafferty is a pioneer in podcasting and an exciting new voice in urban fantasy. After making her podcasting debut in 2004, she has become a respected contributor to podcasting and the speculative fiction genre. Mur is the winner of the 2013 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. In January 2014 she graduated from the Stonecoast program at the University of Southern Maine with an MFA in popular fiction.


Mur has been podcasting since 2004, when she started her essay-focused show, Geek Fu Action Grip.

She started I Should Be Writing the next year, making it one of the longest-running writing podcasts in existence. In 2006, alongside Tracy Hickman and Michael R. Mennenga, Mur founded the Parsec Awards, which recognize excellence in speculative fiction podcasting.

She was the editor of the podcast magazine Escape Pod from 2010-2012, and co-founded Pseudopod, an Escape Pod spin-off presenting “the best in audio horror.” She currently hosts the Angry Robot Books podcast.


Building her audience since 2006 with podcast-only titles, Mur has written several books and novellas. Her first professionally published novel, The Shambling Guide to New York City, debuted with Orbit Books in 2013. The sequel, Ghost Train to New Orleans was published in March 2014. She writes urban fantasy, superhero satire, afterlife mythology, and Christmas stories. All of her early works are available via podcast and ebook.
